Advanced Metering Infrastructure

The Hagerstown Light Department (HLD) will be upgrading our traditional electric meters to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system to meet certain regulatory requirements and industry standards.

This AMI technology will provide many benefits to our customers, that include but are not limited to:

  • Efficient opening & closing of electric accounts when moving or changing tenants.
  • Real-time power outage detection that will provide information to after-hours responders, improving troubleshooting and emergency restoration efforts during a power outage.
  • Power quality monitoring will assist with identifying equipment overload and provide data to engineers for system improvements to prevent outages from occurring.
  • Fewer estimated bills and real time data to help resolve billing and usage questions.

Installation of a small pilot system will be completed during the fall of 2024 with a goal of system-wide installation by June 30, 2029.  Each electric revenue meter will be exchanged with a new model and during this exchange, each electric service will be inspected for integrity to identify degraded facilities and potential hazards.  The attached pamphlet will provide you with information to identify the difference between HLD-owned equipment and Customer-owned equipment.   There may be instances where the property owner will be required to perform repairs and/or upgrades to equipment as these pre-existing conditions are discovered.  Should that occur, HLD staff will work with you to complete this work in a safe and efficient manner with limited interruption.
