Kiwanis Park

Kiwanis Park provides the community access to Antietam Creek. A pavilion overlooking Antietam Creek, a paved parking lot, and paths and boardwalks have been constructed by City staff.

The historic stone structure, the Saylor House, is the first thing visitors see upon entering the parking lot at Kiwanis Park. This historic homestead is being restored in partnership with Washington County Historical Trust for the purposes of educational and recreational programming in history and nature. 

Officially opened on April 30, 2016, explore Kiwanis Park to learn about kayaking opportunities on Antietam Creek, protect monarch butterflies by planting a "Way station," and join in exploring and restoring the historic stone house on the property.

Use of this park must conform with the City's Park Rules & Regulations.

Monarch Butterfly Way Station

Experience the wonder of the epic Monarch Butterfly at the first official City of Hagerstown Parks Monarch Butterfly Way Station. Enjoy this fun family educational opportunity for free at Kiwanis Park, by the Monarch Alliance. Learn about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. Learn about the native plants and milkweed in the garden and about the pollinators inhabiting this ecosystem. Make your garden attractive for Monarch butterflies and pollinators by planting a Monarch butterfly way station with milkweed plants. Learn more from Monarch Alliance.

Saylor House 

The house has been under construction since 2016, when work began to restore the 1800s home. Supported by the Washington County Historical Society, each summer various workshops are hosted at the Saylor House to teach laymen the proper historic preservation methods to restore their own house, while preserving a piece of Washington County history!

Learn how to repair your stone or brick foundations and walls. Join Paul Wade and David Gibney and the Washington County Historical Trust to learn how to repoint your stone or brick foundations and walls. The 2-day hands-on workshop at the historic Saylor House in Kiwanis Park will teach how to assess your mortar, identify the type, how to clean out the joints between stones and breaks, and repoint the joints to maintain your foundation and walls, and prevent water and bug infiltrations. $100/2-day workshop.

Historic Plaster Workshop
Saturdays & Sunday, June 22, 23 & 29 (#8311)

Learn how to repair plaster walls. Learn techniques used to repair and finish walls with original lime materials and modern products. in this hands-on 3-day workshop with Paul Wade, David Gibney, and the Washington County Historical Trust. Participants will be guided in the hands-on repair of the brown coat and final plaster coat. The techniques and skills learned in this workshop are applicable to lathe & plaster repairs, modern drywall repairs, straw bale and cob construction. Workshop includes materials, lunch, and snacks. $150/3-day workshop.

Saylor House Window Seminar & Workshop

Join the Washington County Historical Trust to learn how to save, repair, restore and weatherproof old windows in a 3-day workshop. This 3-day session will cover everything you need to know to save, repair and maintain old windows, including making them weatherproof to eliminate drafts in the house. The second and third days will consist of hands-on workshops to repair your own window or work on windows provided. $150/3-day workshop.
