St. Mary's County Resident Selected as 2018 Blues Fest Visual Artist

Painter and printmaker Susan Carney of St. Mary’s County, Maryland, has been selected as the 2018 Western Maryland Blues Fest poster artist. The 23rd annual event will be held June 1-2, 2018 in Hagerstown, Maryland. Her original artwork, entitled “Guitar Girl,” will form the basis of all of the marketing and promotional materials for the 2018 event, including posters, merchandise, and event advertisements.

Carney’s artwork is a monotype (a one-of-a-kind printmaking process) with the addition of oil paint in select places. It was selected through a blind jury process of submissions sent to the Washington County Arts Council. The use of original artwork represents another important facet of Blues Fest, including the partnership between the City and the Washington County Arts Council.

“It has been exciting to once again search and select an artist whose work is being commissioned by WCAC and the City of Hagerstown,” said Mary Anne Burke, Executive Director of the Washington County Arts Council. “We hope that this opportunity with the 2018 Blues Fest will expand and promote Ms. Carney’s career as an artist and will generate new professional opportunities for her.”

Formerly of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Carney holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Shepherd University and a Master of Fine Arts from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has exhibited in galleries throughout the region and has been the recipient of numerous awards. Her work is in the permanent collection of the West Virginia State Museum.

Her work, known for its evocative imagery, has the ability to encourage viewers to create their own story from the work. “’Guitar Girl’ is meant to express my love for music, as I also play the guitar and mandolin,” Carney said. “It is an extreme honor for this to be selected for the 2018 Blues Fest poster!”

Carney will be featured at a month-long gallery exhibit at the Washington County Arts Council at 34 South Potomac Street in the heart of Hagerstown’s Arts & Entertainment District. The exhibit will open on Friday, June 1, 2018 with a reception from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The show will remain on display until Tuesday, June 26, 2018.
